my journey to health
Some people like to equate life to a roller coaster with its highs and lows, curves, and loop-de-loops. I like to think of it more like a path. The path is already laid out, although only a small fraction of it is visible. Like a roller coaster, it also has highs, lows, curves, and may even feel at times like it has loop-de-loops. But, the journey has a bit of a slower pace. And you, as the journeyer, have a choice. You can enjoy the journey, taking in all the sights and experiences along the way. Or, you can be so focused on the destination that you miss the beauty of life passing by. The journey to health is no different.
My type-A-gotta-have-a-plan-stick-to-the-schedule-follow-the-rules-and-always-be-organized self has typically defaulted to the latter. I lived a lot of days too focused on a schedule, or too worried about the destination, that I missed out on a lot of the beauty of the journey. But one thing I’ve learned over the last decade or so is that’s really no way to live! It’s not only okay to slow down a bit and enjoy the ride, I would argue it’s necessary. There is so much more to life than just surviving each day with the hopes of attaining some sort of goal or trying to force life to look like it’s “supposed” to.
My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.
Maya Angelou
I love this quote. It encompasses what I feel a successful…and enjoyed…journey looks like. The journey to health, true health, finds a harmony with the physical, mental, and emotional. And the path isn’t always easy. It’s definitely not always as direct as we’d like. And it may not even end up at the destination we expected. But please hear me when I say this. If you were sitting in front of me, I would gently pull your face in, lock eyes, and say with absolutely sincerity…it’s worth it!
When you make the choice to squeeze as much joy, create as much fruit, and learn as many lessons as you can from your journey, the result is nothing short of miraculous.
And it took me some time to figure that out. In those moments where it’s all you can do to survive…just hang on. When life feels overwhelming, sometimes the last thing you can think about is how to take care of yourself or how to be healthy. Physical, mental, and emotional health can quickly take a back seat at the times when we need them the most. I feel you. I’ve been there. And sometimes still struggle not to go back. But…that’s not the end of the story. Your journey to health doesn’t have to stop there.
The Key to a Thriving Journey
I’m a firm believer that God is in control of my journey. For some that might seem like it would cause even more stress. And when I was younger, it did. But can I tell you a secret? When you’re able to let go and trust the One who has it all figured out, beautiful things can happen. Instead of feeling like you’re constantly overwhelmed, treading water, or just doing what you must in order to survive, you begin to accept and, dare I say, enjoy all that life brings. You find joy. You begin to thrive! And that’s what I want for you, friend.
I mean, look at this chunk! He’s clearly thriving! You can too!
I look forward to sharing with you more specifics about my journey. Much like you I’m sure, my journey has taken some very unexpected (and if I’m going to be honest, unwanted) turns.
Joy in the Journey
And while I’m still in the midst of some of those unexpected turns, I can confidently tell you that it IS possible to still thrive in the midst of them. It’s possible to bear fruit through them. It’s possible to learn lessons through them. And it’s even possible to find joy in them. Because, you see, my joy doesn’t come from my circumstances. My joy comes from knowing there is a God who is bigger than me who is in control. And you know what…I have a promise that He works all things together for good (Romans 8:28).
And that brings me to where I am today. A place where my journey to health entails not only physical health, but also mental and emotional health. Healthy living doesn’t have to be overwhelming. I truly believe that with every ounce of my being. And that, my friend, is my heart behind this community. I want to hop in the car with you, turn the music up, throw the proverbial map out the window (because, let’s be honest…who uses them anymore?!) and come alongside you on your journey to being a healthy YOU. Sometimes that will involve taking action, and sometimes that will involve letting go. But you’re not alone.
