My daily routine for healthy skin

Youthful, healthy skin is something I think we all desire, but many don’t know how to achieve it. As we get older, our skin begins to show signs of aging through fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, and more. Our collagen production slows down, our cell regeneration slows down, and healthy skin feels more and more impossible to achieve. But, it’s not impossible! In fact, there are many ways to be proactive with supporting healthy skin.

So, how do you do it then?

Healthy skin starts with nutrition and supporting metabolic health, and continues with what we put on our skin. There are tons of products out there nowadays that market themselves as helping you look younger and your skin look healthier. And, I have no doubt that many of them work to some degree. But, we must also consider the ingredients in those products. Many of them are filled with toxic ingredients like pthalates, parabens, “fragrance”, and other toxins that wreak havoc on your overall health. These toxins build up in your body causing an unhealthy toxic load (or body burden). Is your health worth slathering your skin in toxins? I dare say it is not.

My everyday focus for supporting healthy skin is on four parts: cleansing, nourishing, moisturizing, and massaging or dry brushing. I’ve broken each part down to share exactly what I do, why I do it, and what products I use.

Cleansing

I’m sure this doesn’t need to be said, but it’s very important that you’re washing your face every day. Throughout the day, our face is in contact with pollutants, bacteria, viruses, dirt, and even dead skin cells. Washing your face removes this unwanted matter. It also helps balance the pH levels of your skin and keep it hydrated.

I use this to cleanse my face often. I love how it cleanses and gently exfoliates with just water. It has microsilver embedded in the cloth to self-purify as it dries, meaning you don’t have to wash it as often! However, sometimes I want to use more than just microfiber and water so that I’m not only cleansing but also adding nutrients to my skin. For that I highly recommend…

A combination of plant extracts, essential oils, Vitamin E, and macadamia seed oil work to not only cleanse the skin, but also leave it moisturized and looking healthy.

On the days I wear makeup, this is super helpful for removing makeup without all the extra rubbing and scrubbing. It also has microsilver embedded in the microfiber cloth to self-purify as it dries, meaning you don’t have to wash it as often!

Nourishing

While just cleansing your skin is an okay practice, if you’re really wanting to support healthy, clear, and youthful skin, your best practice is to also add products that will nourish your skin after you have washed it. Here are some of my favorite ways.

 

Witch hazel is a popular toner. And while it’s great, you can do a little better. This toner has witch hazel in it, along with several other nutrient-rich ingredients to tone and balance the skin, reduce the appearance of pores, and even oily skin.

 

Essential oils can offer powerful health benefits for your skin. But it goes beyond that. As they absorb into your body, they can also offer additional benefits. Just make sure your oil is 100% pure (just because the bottle says it is, doesn’t mean it’s true). For our home and my clients, I only use doTerra oils due to their reputation for both purity and potency. For tips on how to determine if your essential oil is of high quality, read this.

I mix up a roller bottle blend to support healthy skin with jojoba oil (carrier oil that’s great for your skin) and the following essential oils. This roller bottle allows me to easily add any oils that will address the specific areas I would like to address. Some of my favorites are below.

Tea Tree Oil

A powerful cleansing agent, and an excellent antifungal and antimicrobial agent to fight acne-causing bacteria. Helps with redness and inflammation, and dries out pimples to unclog the glands naturally.

Turmeric Oil

Turmeric oil has many beauty benefits. For the face, you can massage over fine lines to stimulate new cell growth and collagen production, apply to lighten dark spots, and apply before going out into the sun to protect skin

Lavender Oil

Fantastic for so many things, one of which being supporting healthy skin, healing skin blemishes and wounds, rashes, etc.

Frankincense Oil

Supports aging, dry skin, wrinkles, and scars. It’s also an enhancer oil so it helps boost the properties of any other oils it’s used with.

Copaiba Oil

Supports dry skin and acne. Has many anti-inflammatory properties which could help with the inflammation that comes with acne. Like Frankincense, it is an enhance oil, so it will help boost the properties of other essential oils it’s used with.

A combination of Yarrow essential oil and Pomegranate seed oil, this blend helps reduce the appearance of aging skin and promotes the look of young, healthy, smooth skin. It protects, nourishes, and hydrates the skin.

Additional Oils
  • Supporting healthy skin: fennel, sandalwood, myrrh, and patchouli.
  • Supporting dry skin: sandalwood, cedarwood, copaiba, myrrh
  • Supporting oily skin: petitgrain, lemon, wild orange, ylang ylang (Important note: citrus oils are considered photosensitive and could react to the sun and cause a minor rash or skin irritation. If using on your face, only apply at night or at a time when you will not be spending time outdoors for 12 hours.)

Moisturizing

Regardless of whether you have dry, oil, or combination skin, moisturizing your skin is a very important step to incorporate into your skincare routine. It can help decrease your risk of developing skin issues, help your skin look and feel younger, and even help keep pollutants from filling your pores when you go outside.

Anti-Aging

My current moisturizer is this one. It combines powerful essential oils with peptides and botanicals to target the visible signs of aging while moisturizing and softening the skin. If you’re not looking for an anti-aging moisturizer, this is a great alternative. 

Eye Cream

The skin around our eyes is extra sensitive and needs a little additional TLC. It loses its elasticity before the skin anywhere else on your body. Using an eye cream can help with the following symptoms that accompany aging: dark circles under the eyes, bags under the eyes, sun spots, wrinkles, and puffy eyes. This one is a favorite! The roller feels so good as you rub it around your eyes!

Massaging & Dry Brushing

Why take this extra step? There are so many wonderful benefits your skin receives through a gua sha facial or dry brushing. While you don’t necessarily need to do both every day, doing at least one a few times a week could be very beneficial for your skin in terms of tightening and toning, promoting lymphatic drainage, and even exfoliation.

Gua Sha Facial

Gua Sha facials are a massage that involves lightly scraping a flat, rounded tool (typically made of jade or rose quartz) over the skin to release muscular tension, stimulate collagen production, increase circulation and even promote lymphatic drainage. Want to get rid of puffiness and tighten and sculpt your facial skin? This may be for you!

When looking for a Gua Sha stone, you want it to have a curved nook that will allow you to better maneuver your jaw line and cheek bone. As a bonus, look for one with little comb ridges that you can use on fine lines and wrinkles. This is a great option. This is another great option. It doesn’t have the comb ridges, but it does come with a jade roller, which is also great for stimulating your skin.

Dry Brushing

Dry brushing is a fantastic way to exfoliate your skin, support lymphatic drainage, and encourage new cell growth and collagen production. The big things to note when dry brushing are that you want to start with a clean (and dry) face and then rinse and moisturize your face when done. Use a brush specifically made for dry brushing like this one, and add a few drops of Turmeric or Copaiba oil directly to the brush for added benefits.

Spoil your skin recipes

Whether you are spending extra time on your face due to breakouts, or just to give your skin some extra love, these are a couple of my favorite way to combine some of the above mentioned natural remedies.

Turmeric Face Mask

Ingredients:

2 Tablespoons ground oats

3-5 drops doTERRA Turmeric oil

3 Tablespoons yogurt

A few drops of honey

Instructions:

Mix the ground oats, Turmeric oil, yogurt, and honey together to make a paste.
Apply a thin layer of the paste to your face and let it dry for 20 minutes.
Rinse your face with warm water, scrubbing gently to remove the paste.
Finish by applying your favorite moisturizer to your face.

Healthy Skin Facial

Ingredients:

1 Tablespoon Aloe vera gel

1 Tablespoon Raw honey

3-5 drops doTERRA Tea Tree essential oil

Instructions:

Mix ingredients together and massage onto skin. Let sit for 30 minutes and then rinse with warm water.

Feel free to play around with the essential oils. I have used both Tea Tree and Lavender, or you could add some Frankincense or Copaiba. Any of the above listed oils would be good options to try.
